Hey there! My name is John, an English Language and Literature Major and Japanese Language and Literature Minor at the University of Minnesota. I've worked extensively in the editing field, including learning the editing craft from New York Times columnist Michael Tortorello. Additionally, I recently worked as the Fiction Editor for the University of Minnesota's Undergraduate literary magazine, The Ivory Tower. As an English major, I am used to editing all sorts of written works, so I know my way around a red pen.
I am a four-year participant and winner of National Novel Writing Month, and I self-edited those novels that I wrote. I am used to editing not only my own longer works, but also those of my acquaintances, which gives me a deep breadth of experience in editing novels.
When working with an author, I do my best to maintain a friendly and professional relationship with them. For me, this means good communication and relatively frequent contact between the editor and author. Don't be afraid to ask questions or disagree with me. Ultimately, the work belongs to the author, so I try not to be too stubborn when the author is adamantly against a change.
In terms of fees, my feeling is that they would depend on the length of the work and the amount of editing that the author desires. I'm a student, so don't worry; I'm not going to be too expensive.
If you're interested, please let me know!
-John Moen
